Firstly candidates will learn the more technical aspects of navigation, get to identify man made and natural features that will assist them as they discover new locations.
Map reading
Secondly the information printed on a map can be overwhelming. The silver award unwraps this information and allows the individual to recognise the symbols and compare to what is on the ground.
Compass work
Thirdly In conjunction with map reading skills, candidates will understand how to use a compass over more open ground, with little features.
Confidence building
Candidates will gain more confidence in themselves as they plan routes and walk them. They will also understand that errors can be made, but have the skills to make corrections.
