The Bronze National Navigation Award is a practical hands-on award. It is aimed at people with no navigation experience whether you are new to the outdoors or have been relying on others, guidebooks or easy well-defined routes.

Map reading skills

Learn how to effectively use a paper map. understand the notations and symbols to ensure accurate location at any given time during your walk.

Use of compass

Learn how to use a compass to ensure you are heading in the right direction and identify your your location.

Planning your own routes

Use a map to plan new walks prior to your trip. Understand the terrain and prepare your self.

Day 1

  • Introductions and briefing followed by map theory and navigation skills
  • Learn to plan a short local route, then taking it in turns to lead a leg
  • Debrief on the day and recap on content

Day 2

  • Recap on previous days content
  • Assessment begins
    • Confidence and accuracy of navigation
    • Display map reading skills
    • Use of compass
  • Assessment is practical and not a written test
